Summer is that time of the year when food choices have to be more careful. With infections fast spreading and food hygiene a major concern everywhere, health can easily take backseat. Also, keeping a check on foods that cool the body is very important this season. Ragi or finger millet is always known for its soothing effect on the system.
Here is a simple drink made of finger millet that serves the purpose. It is filling, easiest to make and needs just 3 ingredients and 5 minutes to cook. Several families in rural parts of Karnataka have this as their staple meal more than once daily.
Ragi or Finger millet flour – 1 tbsp
Water – 2 cups
Salt to taste
Butter milk- 2 cups
Method: Firstly mix ragi flour with water and stir well. Make sure no lumps are formed. Let the water be in room temperature. Once mixed well, keep the vessel on the flame. Add salt and start stirring continuously. Let the flame be on medium high. Once the mixture begins to boil, turn off the flame and keep aside to cool completely.
Once it is cooled completely, add buttermilk and mix thoroughly. I use a whisk to make the job easy. You can add chopped coriander leaves, cumin powder and finely chopped onion to spice it up. Mix everything well and wash it down your throat.
This is also a best alternative for any main meal as it is very filling. A large glass of this drink will keep your tummy full for 3-4 hours minimum. With iron rich ragi as the main ingredient, this is best for people watching their weight and to those who check their diet.
