A stylist is the one who shops for you – that’s the one liner definition. But that is not all. A stylist actually is aware of all possible brands and their collections and assembles them into something that goes to set trends. For instance, a particular celebrity might wear a Balenciaga shirt with Vero Moda jeans and Jimmy Choo shoes. The jewelry might come from Suhani Pittie. How do that celebrity get to know what brand has what in their best sale list? They are more focused on their acting or other profession. They can’t keep worrying about what to wear to an evening party as such. Meanwhile they also need to look very fashion updated, perfect for the occasion and be competitive as well. It is more of a prestige thing nowadays to keep up with the brands. This is where a stylist steps in.
Generally, a movie star or a fashionista who is on page 3 on a regular basis would hire a stylist’s services on the basis of monthly charges. So if the celebrity has to attend 30 events in a month, the stylist should provide his/her style needs. This includes dress, jewelry, shoes, hand bag, makeup and hair, accessories…like this is a complete package. All these things will be kept ready and the celebrity just wears all of them and walks with pride. If the celebrity by any chance does not have any event to attend in a particular month, they still have to pay the agreed amount to the stylist. This is how a stylist’s source of income works.
Well, this may sound easy, but it is not. To be ready all the time for all types of events for your client is definitely not an easy job. Remember, how we mess up our wardrobe for a single dress and matching earrings that we already know? A stylist definitely can’t afford this to happen. So they will be in touch with all brands of fashion manufacturers and be in agreement with a few to borrow or buy the brand’s products. For instance, the lehenga Jhanvi Kapoor wore for Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s reception will not be worn again by any Bollywood actresses. Though it is a Manish Malhotra design, Jhanvi herself may not wear it again.
But the pictures of Jhanvi in lehenga are all over the place and we bet half the girls who saw them would have dreamt of owning it someday. This makes an easy publicity of the design. The stylist hence would have an arrangement with the designer to borrow the dress for few weeks, style it for a particular star and tag the designer with their piece of work on Instagram,Facebook and everywhere with the picture. This works with mutual collaborations. The stylist makes the look complete with appropriate accessories to go along with the dress and the celebrity’s look is complete.
Celebrities hire a stylist’s service either on a monthly or yearly basis or for any particular occasion. This is the reason we get to know the brands of every particular thing a celebrity is wearing these days. This surely acts as a very big area of promotion to the designers and brands. And in an era where everyone wants to stay unique from the rest, a stylist’s job has gained more importance than before. Anaitha Shroff Adjania, Rhea Kapoor, Tanghavri, Ami are a few top stylists of Bollywood whereas Jukalker, Saniya Sardariya, Shachina Heggar, Ashitha, Neerja Kona, Shravya Verma, Rama are a few big names down south.
