starrer movie has seen the most amazing casting with Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt together after ages. The successful pairing of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt is present to add more colors. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha are also the poster couple raising the expectations to another level. Kiara Advani and Kriti Sanon are also said to be in guest roles.
But, more than anything the first question that people asked after watching Kalank teaser was, “Is this a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie?” The background music, magnanimous sets, costumes, colors and the sets all remind of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies. People definitely like the grandeur that Kalank might offer, but the resemblance cannot be ignored. Karan Johar seems to have dropped his style of movie making and accepted a different forte altogether. Here is a list of 5 similarities in Kalank teaser that reminded us of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
1. Bahaar Begum or Chandramukhi?
Madhuri Dixit is playing Bahaar Begum in Kalank. This role was supposed to be essayed by Late Sridevi. The untimely death of Sridevi brought the role to Madhuri Dixit. She is paired opposite Sanjay Dutt and this is a very sought after casting after decades. But, when we see Madhuri as Bahaar Begum, we cannot stop but think of Chandramukhi from Devadas. The costume, jewelry, body language and expressions of Bahaar Begum are very much like Chandramukhi.
2. Boat and the Beauty
Roop played by Alia Bhatt travels on a boat with a very artistic backdrop. This scene is very similar to the boat scene in Saawariya except the backdrop. In Saawariya the boat was surrounded by lights in an dark background. Here, the boat Roop travels has colorful surroundings and is a visual treat in itself. The visualization of a simple scene in a grand way is a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali style.
3. Dance Moves
Kalank teaser has dance sequences that resemble Bhansali’s heroines. Especially the Ghoomar dance definitely crossed our minds when we saw Sonakshi do those steps. The vibrant hues, grand sets, formations of dance all of it reminds us of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies.
4. Girl with a kite in scorching Sun
We can never forget Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam walking carelessly in the desert with a kite in her hand. The scene in Kalank looks exactly the same. The girl in ghagra running with a kite in her hand reminds us of Nandini from Bhansali’s earlier movie.
5. Aditya or Shahid?
Aashiqui 2 star Aditya Roy Kapur plays Dev Chaudhary in Kalank. He is paired opposite Sonakshi Sinha but is seen in a wedding scene with Alia Bhatt. Though the story has maintained its suspense, it reminds us of Shahid Kapoor as Ratan Singh in Padmaavat. The turban, bright colored Sherwani and the jewelry pattern all resemble Ratan Singh to bits. It’s like Dev Choudhary borrowed Ratan Singh’s wardrobe for this movie!
Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are both movie makers of their own kind. Kjo’s movies generally have a happy ending whereas; Bhansali’s movies end with a sad note. But with Kalank one wonders if Karan is actually copying Bhansali’s style or following the prevalent trend. Even the background score and sets of Kalank are very much like Bhansali’s movies. Whether copied or not, Kalank is definitely one of the most sought after movies this season.
